The FIS code of conduct

How to behave correctly on the ski slope

Can you also not wait any longer? Do you already feel the tingling on your skin and the longing for the first snowflakes falling from the sky? Hopefully it won't be long before the cold season arrives and skiing can start in Winterberg . Every year anew all together fever for the start of the winter sports season - no matter whether Skiliftkarussell Winterberg , ski rental, ski school, hotels and guesthouses - the whole Sauerland and the city Winterberg is looking forward when it becomes white outside again. To sweeten the anticipation a little, we present today the FIS rules for winter sports enthusiasts. Because whoever straps the boards under their feet and wants to start into the adventure of skiing should of course also know how to behave properly - safety has top priority!

What are the F sharp rules of conduct anyway?

The rules are, so to speak, the road traffic regulations for the ski slope. FIS stands for the International Ski Federation (Fédération Internationale de Ski) with its headquarters in Switzerland. In 1967, the set of rules for all skiers and snowboarders was adopted, which applies worldwide. A total of 10 rules have been established to prevent mutual endangerment and accidents. The principle of the rules is "consideration".

The Rules

1)Consideration for other skiers and snowboarders

One must behave in such a way that no one is endangered, harmed or restricted in their activities.

2)Mastery of speed and driving

Speed and style of skiing and snowboarding must be adapted by each skier or snowboarder to his own ability and to the terrain with snow and weather conditions. You must ski on sight, i.e. you can still come to a halt within the range of vision.

3)Choice of lane

The lane must be chosen by the skier or snowboarder coming from behind in such a way that the skier or snowboarder ahead is not endangered.

4)Overtaking

In principle, overtaking is allowed from anywhere - up or down, left or right. However, a distance must be maintained which leaves the overtaken person enough room for all movements.

5)Running-in & starting up

Anyone entering a downhill run or starting again after a stop must ensure, both upwards and downwards, that this happens without endangering themselves or others. The same applies to those who swing or drive up a slope.

6)Stop

Every winter sports enthusiast must avoid staying in confusing and narrow places on a ski run. In the event of a fall, these areas must be cleared as quickly as possible.

7)Ascent & Descent

The edge of the descent is to be used by those who ascend or descend on foot.

8)Observe the signs

All skiers and snowboarders must respect the signs and markings.

9)Assistance

Every winter sports enthusiast is obliged to provide assistance in the event of accidents.

10)Duty to disclose

In the event of an accident, every winter sports enthusiast, whether witness or involved, must give his or her personal details.

What else is there to consider?

The FIS rules of conduct show you the points of reference that you should always follow when going on the slopes. But what if you are still a beginner? If you or your fellow travellers, whether children or adults, have not yet gained any experience with skis or snowboards, we strongly recommend that you visit a ski school and advise you not to climb directly into the lifts and jump onto the slopes. Instead, look for a quiet place with easy terrain and for your own protection, slowly approach the winter sports. After each lap where you come to a safe stop, you can walk a few metres further up the slope. The fun is of course all the greater when you then get onto the right slope and use the lifts. But remember: If you don't manage the slight slope safely beforehand, you endanger not only yourself but also others on the big downhill run! In one of the professional ski schools at Skiliftkarussell Winterberg you will quickly learn the right technique and together with your ski instructor you can tackle the first big downhill run.

And another tip from us: skiing and snowboarding is a sport. And as with any sport, you need a break from time to time. So don't forget to strengthen yourself regularly, have something to eat and drink. How about a visit to one of the rustic ski huts directly in the skiing area Winterberg?

And don't forget, always show consideration when you are jumping on the slopes!
